Class Experience

Club members or newcomers that join the Dreamers and Enthusiast Car Club: Gaming Chapter will take their love for cars and video games to the next level. Simulators, racing, and arcade gaming provide gamers with impressive content and hours of enjoyment on their own. In this chapter of the club, learners will be encouraged to use these games not only as an enjoyable social outlet, but to also better understand where their love of cars and gaming can take them. Club members will embark on various in-game motorsport endeavors closely mirroring the real life experiences of car mechanics, racers & teams, and engineers. While most of the adventuring will be powered by Coach Fred's access to numerous high-quality games and content, club members will also have the opportunity to engage with each other in games depending on the content being covered. Club sessions will generally be divided into 2-3 sections per meeting, with each section covering a different style game/simulator for a period of time. For example, a session may start with an in-depth use of Car Mechanic Simulator (part 1), where club members will work together on a project vehicle of their liking. The club may then transition into the Motorsports Manager portion of the class (part 2), wherein members will continue to work together to manage the operations of a world-class level racing organization. To end the session, the club may engage with the teacher in a racing/arcade style game (part 3), like iRacing, BeamNG.drive, or Rocket League (arcade) where racing techniques, physics, and strategies will be discussed and practiced. Interaction is key to making this chapter of the club successful, and learners will be encouraged to share their desired games and how they would like to spend time in the sessions. With that being said, there is no requirement for learners to actually have or play any of the games, however in many circumstances the multiplayer capabilities of these games could enrich the overall learning environment (part 3, for reference). As a life long gamer myself, I have noticed that many of life's challenges subtly (or blatantly) make their way into video games. Frustration, despair, and dejection are common momentary effects of video games. I intend to use that to help club members persevere through challenges not only individually, but as a unit as well.

Learning Goals

Here is an outline of the first 8 weeks of club meetings:

Week 1 | Thursday 12/10/2020: Learners will be introduced to games for the class and will be polled to see varying interests for moving forward. Learners will be introduced to gaming expectations, requirements, and fundamentals. Coach Fred will showcase his materials including controller, steering wheel and pedals, as well as computers and computer requirements. The session will end with brief entries into the BeamNG.drive title to exemplify the potential of modern video games.

Week 2 | Thursday 12/17/2020: Learners will be reminded of club expectations and how they will navigate materials moving forward. Learners will be polled to see varying interests for moving forward. Depending on learner turnout and poll results, Coach Fred will re-introduce the materials that will be used for the day's session. Learners and Coach Fred will then engage with any of the listed materials, likely starting with Car Mechanic Simulator, moving into Motorsports Manager, and finishing with BeamNG.drive.

Week 3 | Tuesday 12/22/2020: Learners will be reminded of club expectations and how they will navigate materials moving forward. Learners will be polled to see varying interests for moving forward, and if learners have been consistent in their attendance and requests, Coach Fred may opt to allow multiplayer experiences at this point. Depending on learner materials and access, Coach Fred will use the last part of the session (see "parts" in course description) to engage in synchronous group gaming activities.

Weeks 4-8 | Tuesday 12/29/2020, Thursday 1/7/2021, Thursday 1/14/2021, Thursday 1/21/2020, Thursday 1/28/2020: Learners will be reminded of club expectations and how they will navigate materials moving forward. Learners will be polled to see varying interests for moving forward. At this point, the club will be acclimated to expectations and required materials. Depending on club progress and interests, learners can expect to continue where the previous week left off with content and games. This will continue and will be adjusted as necessary depending on learner requests and teacher observation.

Parental Guidance
All video games used will follow Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) guidelines and recommendations. With that being said, video games sometimes require additional parental consent before a younger audience can engage with the content. I will list out the planned games in this section with their ESRB/applicable ratings for parents to consider before joining this course: *** indicates widely enjoyed game that is featured frequently by member request. Motorsport Manager: Rated E10+: Everyone 10 and Above *** Rocket League: Rated E for Everyone *** BeamNG.drive: Still in its early access phase, this game does not feature interpersonal violence or anything suggestive in nature. It is a physics simulator, making it realistic but still an enjoyable experience for all ages. I would designate this as E10+ due to its level of realism. *** Car Mechanic Simulator 2018: Rated E for Everyone DiRT 4: Rated T for Teen due to the lyrics in the game which will be turned OFF due to the interference they would cause in interacting with learners. *** DiRT Rally 2.0: Rated T for Teen due to the lyrics in the game which will be turned OFF due to the interference they would cause in interacting with learners. *** Assetto Corsa: Still in its early access phase, this game does not feature interpersonal violence or anything suggestive in nature. It is a physics simulator, making it realistic but still an enjoyable experience for all ages. I would designate this as E10+ due to its level of realism. *** CarXDrift Racing Online: Rated E for Everyone Automation - The Car Company: Rated E for Everyone *** F1 2020: Rated E for Everyone *** Forza Horizon 4: Rated E for Everyone Need for Speed Most Wanted: Rated E10+ for Everyone 10+ Project Cars 2: Rated E for Everyone The Crew 2: Rated T for Teen due to the lyrics in the game which will be turned OFF due to the interference they would cause in interacting with learners.
