Beginner Level
In this class learners will analyze 2 poems "The Dream Keeper" and "Dreams" by Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes. They will identify figurative language and other literary devices in the poems. They will discuss interpretations of the poems and identify the morals of the poem. Learners will also have the opportunity to write their own poem modeled after one of Hughes' poems. This will give them the chance to practice using figurative language and literary devices in their own writing. The 10-minute mini-lesson will be direct instruction/lecture. The rest of the class will be discussion and creative writing, so learner participation is strongly encouraged. Learners will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their writing from peers and the teacher. The class structure will be as follows: Introduction: 5 minutes Mini-Lesson on Literary Devices: 10 minutes Analyzing the poems: 20 mins (10 minutes per poem) Writing a "Dream" poem": 15 minutes Share and receive feedback: 10 minutes
