Class Experience

Introduction to Debating - Course Outline

Week 1 - Skillful ways to create an argument 
In this high energy introductory session, students will meet the other students in their club and learn the fundamentals of making effective arguments. Students will practice generating arguments on a range of motions including ‘This House would ban school uniforms’ and ‘This House would make everyone vegan.’

Week 2 - Stylish speaking styles and building an impactful speech

Students will learn how to structure their ideas, challenge others respectfully, work as a team, critically analyse and engage with big topics and develop their own beliefs. They will build up to a formal debate and develop confidence and future skills through student-centred learning. There is a focus on understanding key stakeholders and the ways diverse groups will be impacted by big ideas. Students practice respectfully challenging and disagreeing with each other’s ideas, and defending their own opinions through clearly structured and well-reasoned arguments.
