Class Experience

What’s the feature that’s right in the middle of our face? Our nose! That’s why it’s so important to know how to draw and shade noses if we are going to take our portrait drawings to the next level!
In this class, students will practice drawing and shading noses of all different shapes and sizes, and from various angles. We will discuss how shadows and light perspective effect the shading of a nose. Each student will have the opportunity to use their own level of skills to create a piece of art that they can be proud of. This class in unique in the fact that it can be taken by beginner artists, or more experienced artists looking to improve their portrait drawings. Students will start with the basics, and then they can keep building on that to create more detail. And of course, I do not expect perfection! This will be a fun, interactive class where I will be sketching right along with my students. I strongly promote an environment where we can laugh at our own mistakes and keep learning and practicing!
Learners will need a pencil, blank paper (preferably sketching paper), a good eraser, and a straight edge to trace (a ruler or piece of paper folded in half).
I am a self-taught professional artist, specializing in oil portrait paintings. I believe that art is about self expression and learning, and I hope to create a fun, interactive environment where students can develop a love for art while building their confidence in a new skill.

I am a professional artist, specializing in oil portrait paintings, and I have had the privilege of displaying my artwork in venues across the country. I believe that art is about self expression and learning, and I hope to create a fun, interactive environment where students can develop a love for art while building their confidence in a new skill.
I have always struggled with expecting “perfection” of myself, especially in my art, so I am constantly reminding my students, as well as myself, that perfection is not required, and that practice, not unreasonable expectations, is what a advances our skills.
My joy in teaching comes from the comments of my students and their parents, expressing that they created something they didn’t know was possible.
