What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students may wish to use extra time to complete their drawings. Flex classes are particularly suitable for the medium of colored pencil because although some learners work very quickly, others (like myself!) prefer to work at a slower pace.Assessment
Students are invited to post images of their work to receive feedback and suggestions from the teacher. Photos may be posted in the classroom to receive video feedback, or sent through messenger for written feedback.Class Experience
**This class is available to be scheduled at your request! Message with your preferred start date. Flex class lessons are recorded and may be completed on the day(s) of your choosing. *********************************** Students will put their colored pencil drawing skills to use, to create a beautiful project that includes black fur, white fur, and maybe even a little symbolic meaning! We'll practice techniques specific to creating realistic black fur and white fur, practice idea generation and infusing our work with symbolism, discuss strategies for setting up an effective composition, and create an image with shading, texture, and a background. **Artist-grade colored pencils (such as Prismacolors) are required for this course. Lessons are presented through video demonstrations, for students to follow as they draw. Flex classes allow learners to pause periodically in order to complete each part of the exercise, if needed. For our final drawing, learners may follow the teacher's example, or may apply techniques learned in class and create their own design. Some lessons are divided into several shorter videos, to help students organize their class time. Opportunities for further practice will be provided each week, along with guided activities and discussion questions that allow students to share tips, tricks, techniques, and to connect with one another as classmates. Examples of extension activities include "scavenger hunts" for images that illustrate each lesson's objective, drawing challenges issued to fellow artists, and the opportunity to offer kind and helpful feedback to classmates. At the end of lesson 4, students will have a completed animal portrait drawing to share with friends or family! Weekly topics: 1. Techniques specific to white fur and black fur practice drawings 2. Designing and arranging a composition: subject & symbolism, thumbnail sketches, and image transfer 3. Blocking in shadows and laying the "ground" 4. Filling in color, adding highlights, final steps to preserve the work Students should post photos of their drawings in the class chat, or to send the images privately through messenger, to receive feedback from the teacher. Please post, so that I can give you helpful feedback, as well as affirmation for all the things you're doing really well! Students who are new to colored pencil drawing are highly encouraged to begin with the course, "Drawing with Prismacolor Pencils (for Beginners)." https://outschool.com/classes/drawing-with-prismacolor-pencils-flex-class-Ekg1oFIc#us3u0MdGLD
Learning Goals
We will practice using artist-quality colored pencils to blend, shade, and create realistic textures and forms, specifically focusing on the properties of black and white objects. Students will learn how to arrange an aesthetically pleasing composition, (optionally) infuse their work with symbolism, and build the layers of their drawing to create richer and more nuanced artworks.
