Class Experience

In this class, we will focus on discovering alternative methods of drawing and experiment with ways to develop these artworks and creative thinking skills.

Different methods we will explore together include:

Methods of drawing that focuses on linking unrelated images in creative ways using line, shape, color, texture, and value. This is a great method for getting your creative juices flowing and helps you move past "artists block". Plus, its a lot of fun! The main materials used in the exploration of this lesson include magazines, markers, pencils, colored pencils, sharpies, and gel pens.
Methods that are in reverse of traditional drawing. Instead of adding shading to your work, you will learn how to subtract out lighter values and highlights from a prepared surface using charcoal, graphite, and conte.
Methods that focus on using mainly black and white. In this lesson, we will focus on utilizing positive and negative space to convey a narrative or story using silhouette. The main material for this lesson is black marker or sharpie, but can also include the addition of color using either marker or watercolors.
Methods that focus on learning how to use colored pencils to make realistic artworks. For this work, we will study different ways to apply and layer color to increase the realistic qualities of the piece.

No background knowledge is required for this course. It is recommended that students take Drawing Techniques before taking this course, but it is not required. The Drawing Techniques and Drawing Techniques II courses can be taken in either order.

For homework, students will need to spend between 1 and 2 hours per week developing a final artwork, using the instructions/discussion from the week, that will be provided in a video at the beginning of each week. Learner progress will be evaluated through in progress photos of their work and correspondence with the teacher about progression during the creation process throughout the week. The teacher will provide individual feedback and guidance as the student works through their weekly projects.

This is a self-paced class with no live meetings. Students will be provided videos and instruction for each lesson and skills to practice. The teacher will provide feedback to student work within a day of posting. Students are encouraged to pace themselves to one lesson a week, but can spend as much time as needed to complete the projects.

Artist. Teacher. Mother.
Hello! I am an art educator that has a passion for teaching all things art related. My experiences include teaching painting/drawing, photography, graphic design, sewing, sculpture, and art history to all ages (Kindergarten thru College). My goal with each student is to not only teach them how to improve their skill and knowledge, but how to think creatively and reflect themselves in their artwork.
My background includes a Bachelors of Art Education through Towson University and a Masters of Art Education through Boston University.
I am an active artist myself; frequently showing work in exhibits and working on various painting and graphic design commissions. I feel that in order to be a successful and current art educator, it is important to constantly be working as a professional artist in the field and to bring that knowledge and experience into the classroom.
I look forward to teaching your developing artists!
