Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class will focus on using graphite pencils and charcoal to achieve well drafted drawings. It is a Highschool level drawing course and counts for a year art credit per grade. I have designed this course for homeschoolers who would like to get a jump on college level drawing courses. They will learn similiar lessons that are taught at a college level without the reading component. The student will build accuracy at drawing people, places and things in a believable fashion. We will start by becoming acquinted with the materials the class will be using. The class will focus less on realism and more about line, shadows, texture, lights and marks on the page to create believable 3-D form on paper. The students will start the 17 week course drawing 4x6 rectangles that will each have a macro sized drawing within it that uses the various pencils. The instructor will give examples and the student will draw along with the teacher during class time. The teacher will use the book "Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain" for examples. This book teaches many skills and the instructor learned from this book during her B.F.A. degree and her M.F.A. degree. Each week the student will be shown a reference and we will complete a drawing from it while learning about different drawing techniques.

Learning Goals
Every week we will draw something new together based on a different drawing style or topic to practice making an image 3-D. I will demonstrate a variety of drawing techniques like gesture, hatching, crosshatching, contouring, and shading. I will be using a photo reference in class on screen. Learners will draw what I draw, but are also encouraged to add in their own creative perspective.

I believe in classical education and teaching by example. This means that I draw along with the learners, show them different techniques and explain the process as we go through the hour of class. This class can accommodate all skill levels. Learners are encouraged to draw at their own pace and ask questions as needed. Feedback can be given at any time throughout the class.
