We will practice drawing techniques including gesture, texture, shading, and background. We will take verbal descriptions and translate them into images (practice rendering/illustration) using photographs as reference. We will hear stories from the mythology of a variety of cultures.
I'm a longtime teacher whose favorite thing is interdisciplinary lesson experiences. My original idea for this class was to simply show my students learn how to draw magical creatures-- but then I thought, what if we could combine drawing with stories? And also target some drawing techniques that would help them draw, not just this one image, but maybe anything they could imagine? This class combines some of my very favorite things-- mythology, drawing, journaling, and creative exploration!
Students will need blank drawing paper, or a sketchbook. They may work in pencil or pen, and may choose to add color if desired, in the medium of their choice.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will sometimes use photographs of people as references. Photographs may depict a diverse range of body types, and respect for all models will be expected. There will be no nudity, however some figures may be clothed in leotards, gym shorts, or similar. Please feel free to address concerns with me before class begins.
