Class Experience

In this 12-week course, students will meet once a week to learn the basics of drawing characters in anime & manga style. We will first learn the basics of drawing faces and bodies, and then delve deeper into the details and build on what we've learned. Students are encouraged to ask questions and modify what we learn to fit their interests. At the end of each class, we will have time for students to share their work. Sharing is encouraged, but not required. The breakdown of each week's lesson is as follows,

Week 1: Faces. We will start by learning how to draw anime & manga style faces. We will learn how to draw the shape of the face, as well as all of the elements that go inside the face. This week we will focus on the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Week 2: Faces Part 2: This week we will finish the faces we started the previous week by adding the neck, ears, and other details. We will also look at how to draw faces in ¾ view.

Week 3: Hair Part 1. In this class, we will explore a wide range of hairstyles in anime & manga style. The exact hairstyles taught will vary by class, depending on what the students want to learn, but will include a variety of hairstyles, such as spiky hair, curly hair, pigtails, ponytails, buns, braids, etc. This week we will focus on short hair.

Week 4: Hair Part 2. We will continue our exploration of hair and learn how to draw long hairstyles.

Week 5: Faces Part 3. This week we will learn how to draw faces in profile (side) view. We will discuss how a different angle changes the way we draw the parts of the face. We will also discuss how to modify hair when shown from the side.

Week 6: Bodies part 1. We will learn how to draw bodies in anime & manga style. We will learn a technique that starts with a basic outline and uses simple shapes to build the body. We will practice this technique with a basic body, and then look at examples of how the technique can be used to draw any pose. This week we will focus on drawing a female character.

Week 7: Bodies part 2: This week we will review the techniques from the previous week and apply them to a different body type. This week we will focus on drawing a male character.

Week 8: Emotions Part 1. We will review what we learned in week one and take a deeper look at how to express emotion through our drawings. This week will focus on conveying emotions through facial expressions.

Week 9: Emotions Part 2. This week we will look at how body language can convey emotions. We will build on the previous week to consider how to convey emotions in different situations and with different intensities by using the whole body.

Week 10: Clothing. This week we will learn to draw a number of outfits step by step. We will look at drawing pants, skirts, and shirts.

Week 11: Chibis. This week we will look at drawing chibi style anime characters. Chibi characters are miniature, cute versions of characters.

Week 12: Finale. In our last class, we will use what we have learned throughout the series to draw a complete character, including the full body, face, hair, clothes, and consideration for position and facial expression. The teacher will demonstrate by walking through drawing an example character. Students are welcome to follow along and draw the same character as the teacher, or to follow the same basic steps, but make their own choices for pose, clothing, hair, etc. At the end of class, we will have time to share our final drawings, and ask any remaining questions before we say our goodbyes.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Please note that for weeks 6 and 7 we will be drawing the outline of a human body without clothing, with the intention that students may add clothing later outside of class. While we will draw simple lines to convey essential parts of the body (such as the curve of the chest), we will NOT be drawing any intimate details or genitalia within the outline. We will essentially be drawing the body with the same amount (or lack of) detail as an unclothed Barbie doll. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me before class.

Hello! My name is Emily. I’m a teacher, writer, yogi, and artist. I have a passion for words, movement, art, and food! It brings me so much joy to see young learners discover new interests. I am delighted to be able to help them explore new topics and fan the flames of their interest.

My philosophy is that learning should be fun. In class, I love getting to know my students. I want to hear their thoughts and give them the tools to pursue their passions.

On Outschool, I am excited to offer classes in drawing in anime/manga style. I have a variety of classes that focus on different aspects of drawing. My class list is continually growing. I love to share what I am passionate about with young learners and encourage their ideas and interests.

One of the things that makes me unique as a teacher is my wide range of teaching experience. I have worked with students in kindergarten, middle school, college, and beyond. I have taught students in the USA, South Korea, and China. I have taught classes online and in person. These experiences make me a well-rounded teacher accustomed to adapting teaching style and lesson content to a wide range of students’ needs.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Dance and English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. I have also completed yoga teacher training and studied traditional Irish singing at the University of Limerick. Both of my parents are artists, and I have a life-long passion for the arts. I have worked with students from kindergarten to college age. I have taught subjects including dance, art, Spanish, and more. I recently spent four years living in South Korea where I taught English as a second language in public middle schools and private kindergarten.

When I am not teaching, I can be found reading, dancing, working on my latest novel, or playing with my cats.
