Class Experience

Drawing from Song Lyrics:
This is a creative and interactive drawing class in which we find inspiration in song lyrics.
Each week we will be listening, analyzing and discussing lyrics from a current pop song and then creating a drawing inspired by the song. I will be brainstorming ideas, but learners are free to draw whatever the song inspires. Interaction and feedback on each other's drawings will be given and encouraged.

What to expect:
I will begin class by introducing the song, and giving some background information about the artist. We will then watch a lyric video for the song. Afterwards, I will be asking several discussion questions related to the lyrics and music. I will also be giving a list of possibilites for the drawing. We will begin the drawing session while listening to some music to get into the mood. For the second half of the drawing session, I will encourage interaction between learners as we talk about the ideas behind our drawings.

Songs:
For each section and group of learners, I try to choose current songs that align with their interests and musical taste. Each Monday I will announce the song we will be listening to for the week on the classroom page. Past songs have included Dua Lipa's Levitating, Billie Eilish's My Future, Good Days by SZA and Immaterial Girl by Sophie. I encourage learners to share songs they like and make requests.

After Class:
Learners can draw at their own paste. They can take the time to complete their drawing projects after class. If they wish to do so, they can show their finished projects to the class the following week, or post a photo of the drawing on the classroom page.

Class Values:
In my drawing classes, I value the process of drawing as much as the end result. I do not give step-by-step how to draw instructions as I encourage learners to use observation and imagination to create their own version of the drawing activity. I like creating a positive environment focusing on the enjoyment of creating, learning and drawing.

About Me:
I am a visual artist from Canada. My artwork is drawing based, I spend lots of time creating large abstract pencil crayon drawings. I also love pop music with a great passion. I write and produce songs and have been playing in a band for the past five years. I am excited to listen, talk and create with you!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I choose, to the best of my own judgment, songs that have age appropriate themes for teenagers. I post the song on the classroom page every Monday prior to the class if parents want to look them up. We normally don't watch the music video to focus only on the music and lyrics for inspiration, there have been exceptions when I feel like the video has inspiring imagery that helps understand the lyrics.
Supply List
For each class, you can bring any type of drawing materials you enjoy working with, (make sure you bring colors) . Bring a sketch book or one or two sheets of paper.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a visual artist from Canada, and I am passionate about drawing. I am inspired by kid's imaginations and want to help them express their own ideas by giving them a context, tools and techniques to do so. In my classes, I value the experience of creating, drawing and playing as much as the end result. I use sensory activities, games and interactions that help develop the learner's creativity and drawing skills.

I've been teaching art for over 10 years, working with diverse populations and contexts. I have taught and facilitated art workshops with teenagers, individuals dealing with issues related to mental health and homelessness, families in art museums as well as children in summer camps. I have a bachelor's degree in design art, and a graduate certificate in contemporary art practices where I focused my work on drawing.

Please reach out if you have any questions about my classes or schedule. I look forward to seeing you in the classroom!
