Class Experience

Each week, a different creature will be chosen and drawn. From the fearsome lion, or the clever honey bee, to Dragons, and Big Foot, we will draw, color, and socialize our way through many interesting and exciting real and imaginary creatures.

I use a step by step approach while teaching, which helps keep everyone moving at a similar pace, and always encourage learners to ask questions or for help if they are unclear about how to proceed. I try to maintain a calm and engaging environment, emphasizing the process of creating art over the end result. I truly believe any one with an interest and willingness to learn can have a great time in this class. Materials used will be paper, drawing pencil, eraser, and the students choice of coloring material. I typically use crayons.

Class time is usually around 40 minutes, but depends on the class size, and the complexity of the weeks topic. Small classes are usually a little quicker, and complex subjects might take a few minutes longer etc.

After these dates, new topics will be added, and student requests can always be incorporated into the schedule at any time. Listed below are the scheduled weekly topics. If you are interested in a particular week, and want to see the reference material I am using as inspiration, let me know, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!

My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.

I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes I grew up with or the feelings the weather or a book inspired in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.

I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.

In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
