Class Experience

In this one time intermediate drawing class learners will create unique pencil or ink self portrait drawings distorted by reflections.
We will first examine samples by the great masters
( Pieter Claesz, Vanitas with Violin and Glass Ball
Parmigianino, Self-portrait in a mirror
The Arnolfini Portrait, by Jan Van Eyck
Hand with Reflecting Sphere by MC Escher)
We will then move on to examine our own objects of reflection and identify the distortions in the surface.
We will create a pencil sketch first outlining our contours, proportions, and composition. We will complete our work by building up our values using hatching and cross hatching techniques with a fine liner.

Learners in this class should be comfortable speaking and sharing on camera as that will be our primary method of communication.
In this class learners will enjoy some discussion as we look at our samples and supplies, we will work together through the exercise and the learners will be able to see the teacher's progress as they make their own. This is NOT a step-by-step class. Learners in this class will be guided through the art exercise but will work on individual pieces unique to them.
In this class learners will benefit from having a strong interest in drawing and drawing techniques and be familiar with intermediate visual arts language including terms such as contour, value, composition, focal point, and contrast.

*Please note - while our goal is to complete a finished drawing during class time, every artist works at different paces and so it is possible that learners will not complete the inking process by the end of the class time. Completing the drawing outside class time and sharing in the classroom at a later time is always encouraged. Learners will leave class with the knowledge and experience needed to complete any unfinished progress in their own time*

**This class will require minimal enrollment of 3 learners to run. Inquiries about private lessons are welcome**

Learning Goals

Learners will come away from this one time class with the knowledge and practice needed to further explore observational drawing, traditional hatching and cross hatching techniques, and the ability to create and work from a value scale.
