Class Experience

In this course, we will meet once a week for four weeks to explore the basics of drawing anime & manga style characters. Each class will include instruction from the teacher with students following along to practice and experiment with the material, as well as time to share student work at the end of class. Students are encouraged, but not required, to share their drawings. See below for a detailed breakdown of the topics of each week.

Week 1: Faces in Side-View. This week we will learn how to draw faces in profile (side) view. We will discuss how a different angle changes the way we draw the parts of the face. We will also briefly discuss how to modify hair when viewed from the side.

Week 2: Clothing. This week, students will learn how to draw two outfits in anime & manga style. We will learn how to draw a T-shirt and jeans, as well as a Japanese school uniform, which includes a short-sleeved shirt, pleated skirt, and sailor collar. We will also look at how to draw shoes and socks. By drawing these two outfits, students will learn techniques that can be applied to other styles of clothing. (**please note that a printout will be provided for this week’s class)

Week 3: Chibis Part 1. This week we will begin our exploration of drawing chibi style characters. Chibi is an art style seen in anime and manga that depicts characters with exaggerated proportions such as a large head, big eyes, and short, round bodies. This week we will look at a variety of chibis by drawing several character bases in different styles and poses.

Week 4: Chibis Part 2. This week we will return to the chibis we started the previous week and finish our drawings by adding faces, hair, and clothing.

Before taking this course, I recommend students take one of the following courses or have some experience drawing faces and hair in anime & manga style:
Drawing Anime & Manga Style Characters for Beginners Mini Series,
Drawing Anime & Manga Style Characters for Beginners Camp,
OR the individual one-time classes covering faces, bodies, and hair.

Please feel free to message me with any questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Emily. I’m a teacher, writer, yogi, and artist. I have a passion for words, movement, art, and food! It brings me so much joy to see young learners discover new interests. I am delighted to be able to help them explore new topics and fan the flames of their interest.

My philosophy is that learning should be fun. In class, I love getting to know my students. I want to hear their thoughts and give them the tools to pursue their passions.

On Outschool, I am excited to offer classes in drawing in anime/manga style. I have a variety of classes that focus on different aspects of drawing. My class list is continually growing. I love to share what I am passionate about with young learners and encourage their ideas and interests.

One of the things that makes me unique as a teacher is my wide range of teaching experience. I have worked with students in kindergarten, middle school, college, and beyond. I have taught students in the USA, South Korea, and China. I have taught classes online and in person. These experiences make me a well-rounded teacher accustomed to adapting teaching style and lesson content to a wide range of students’ needs.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Dance and English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. I have also completed yoga teacher training and studied traditional Irish singing at the University of Limerick. Both of my parents are artists, and I have a life-long passion for the arts. I have worked with students from kindergarten to college age. I have taught subjects including dance, art, Spanish, and more. I recently spent four years living in South Korea where I taught English as a second language in public middle schools and private kindergarten.

When I am not teaching, I can be found reading, dancing, working on my latest novel, or playing with my cats.
