In this class, students will learn how to draw a human body in anime/manga style. Students will first learn how to outline the body and measure proper proportions. Then they will fill in the body with basic shapes such as circles and cylinders. Then they will make adjustments to those shapes to create the final body. In this class, we will focus on a basic, standing figure, but the techniques we learn can be applied to any pose and body type. ****Please note that in this course, students will vote at the start of class to decide if the teacher will demonstrate drawing a male or female character. Students are welcome to draw whatever character type they prefer regardless of the vote. I will describe how to draw both and I will show pre-drawn examples of multiple body types, but there will only be time to demonstrate drawing one body live. If your learner has a strong preference for drawing a boy or girl and wants to makes sure they see that character type drawn in class, I also offer this class under a different listing called “Drawing Anime & Manga Style Bodies for Beginners: Male Figure,” and, “Drawing Anime & Manga Style Bodies for Beginners: Female Figure,” in which we will focus on the character type listed in the class title.**** For more classes on drawing in anime/manga style, check out my other classes such as "Drawing Anime & Manga Style Faces for Beginners," "Drawing Anime & Manga Style Hair for Beginners," and "Drawing Basic Emotions in Anime & Manga Style."
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Please note that we will be drawing the outline of a human body without clothing, with the intention that students may add clothing later outside of class. While we will draw simple lines to convey essential parts of the body (such as the curve of the chest), we will NOT be drawing any intimate details or genitalia within the outline. We will essentially be drawing the body with the same amount (or lack of) detail as an unclothed Barbie doll. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me before class.
Supply List
Ruler Pencil Paper Eraser (A kneaded eraser will be especially helpful in this class, but any eraser that doesn't leave a smudge will work)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

On Outschool, I am excited to offer classes in drawing in anime/manga style. I have a variety of classes that focus on different aspects of drawing. My class list is continually growing. I love to share what I am passionate about with young learners and encourage their ideas and interests.
One of the things that makes me unique as a teacher is my wide range of teaching experience. I have worked with students in kindergarten, middle school, college, and beyond. I have taught students in the USA, South Korea, and China. I have taught classes online and in person. These experiences make me a well-rounded teacher accustomed to adapting teaching style and lesson content to a wide range of students’ needs.
I have a bachelor’s degree in Dance and English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. I have also completed yoga teacher training and studied traditional Irish singing at the University of Limerick. Both of my parents are artists, and I have a life-long passion for the arts. I have worked with students from kindergarten to college age. I have taught subjects including dance, art, Spanish, and more. I recently spent four years living in South Korea where I taught English as a second language in public middle schools and private kindergarten.
When I am not teaching, I can be found reading, dancing, working on my latest novel, or playing with my cats.
