Average rating:4.8Number of reviews:(23)
Students will draw in a variety of manga and anime styles, while also learning some fun Japanese language basics & discussing Japanese culture.

Class experience

Each week we will focus on a different aspect of drawing in a Japanese “manga” style, such as humans, animals, kawaii and chibi style, plus learning about famous manga artists lives and work. Students will learn how to pronounce and write their own names, learn animal names and sounds, and learn some basicJapanese words and kana for a variety of things and situations.
I hold a BA (2004) in Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. I have been a self employed community artist and private art instructor since 2012.

I have loved Anime and Manga since 7th grade, back in 1995 before there was even an internet connection in my house! I also studied Japanese in Middle/High school for 5 years, and after college taught English through the JET program to 1st through 6th graders at Misato Elementary, in Azuminoshi, Nagano, Japan. I often incorporate basic Japanese alphabet, Kanji, language and culture into my art lessons. I am very excited to be sharing my love of all things Japan with the next generation of world travelers and anime and manga enthusiasts.
Drawing supplies: A student can complete this class entirely with paper, pencil, and eraser, but I encourage students to experiment with any drawing media of their choice.
Suggested supplies: Sketchbook, multipurpose paper, Markers, color pencils, brush pens, watercolor paint (I also recommend a blow dryer to speed up this process!) watercolor paper, Sharpie markers, any size paper surfaces will work! I like a large paper because it give me more room to work out my mistakes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Artwork viewed in class may contain images of cartoon violence and supernatural powers.

WWII history and post war relations between America and Japan is intrinsic to the creation of contemporary manga looks and themes and will be addressed in discussion, but not in overly graphic detail.
