Students will use chalk pastel to draw a portrait of their pet. We will look at how to blend the colors with our fingers, and we will look at specific areas of the pet, like their fur, nose, eyes, etc.
Teacher Jessica has sold commissioned artwork to customers, including many pet portraits. Teacher Jessica has also taught art classes in public schools and she specializes in pencil drawing. To see some of Teacher's chalk pastel artwork, please view her portfolio here: https://jessicashirley2.wixsite.com/expressions/artwork .
No homework is assigned for this class. Additional resources are provided to encourage students' own learning afterwards.
-Enough chalk pastel to cover a standard sized (8.5" x 11") sheet of paper [Here is an example of a set of chalk pastels: https://www.amazon.ca/Pastel-Square-Pastels-Chalks-Assorted/dp/B07WYJ57F6/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=chalk+pastel&qid=1599090719&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyTTNWVU5WRzFMWVNNJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzgyMjk0VUVJNkRCMExJVUtEJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAyODQyMDMzQzlPTEpWTzQ0S0RVJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== . You do not need to buy these ones, but the important thing is that you find either chalk or soft pastels, the ones where the color is soft and blends easily. It should be a kind of 'dusty' material.] -Standard sized sheet of paper. Construction paper will work better than printer paper, but printer paper works ok too. Extra resources: Blending stump to blend the colors. Teacher will just use her finger to blend in class, but you can try a blending stump if you want a finer blend. Here is an example of a set on amazon Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/Blending-Tortillions-Sandpaper-Sharpener-Pointer/dp/B07CZBL8MQ?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1 .
Learners can opt in to an informal written assessment, by messaging the teacher. Learners can request an assessment for A) The student's art piece B) The learner's performance during class C) Both. For assessment option A, students can send teacher a photo of their drawing, and teacher will provide written informal feedback about what teacher would suggest for the student's next steps. Teacher will provide comments for what is notable about the student's work. Teacher Jessica loves to look at students' artwork and provide feedback but she also understands that for some students they will just enjoy to do the artwork and are more comfortable reflecting on it on their own. The most important thing is that the student feels like they are learning something new. Art can be viewed as a very subjective matter, so this is why Teacher has set the assessment to an opt-in process. Both options- no assessment or assessment- are great! Thank you for taking the class, either way!
1 hour per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Feel free to refer, as you wish, to the Elements of Art sheet. This will be emailed the day of class. Thank you!
