What's included

10 live meetings
10 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. I call my homework "follow-up activities" because they are NOT mandatory. I offer a follow-up activity after each class for those students who would like to practice further what we learned in class that day. These activities also give ample opportunities for students to earn my star student awards and grow as artists.
Assessment
I give time at the end of each class for students to present their work as part of our weekly "art critique." This is for me to see where the students are at on their artistic journey, as well as get them comfortable with sharing their work with their peers and offer tips and tricks to each other. I never force students to share their work out of respect, but have found that with this gentle approach most students come around to it when they feel comfortable and after seeing how much fun the other students have doing it.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Give your artistic child a crash course in drawing our world with pencil in hand and sketchbook in the other! We'll explore topics like Perspective, Motion, Composition, and MORE. This beginner class is great for new artists and those wanting to take their drawing skills to the next level.
*Please see the course syllabus for further details.

I've been an artist my entire life and have worked professionally in the animation industry for many years, so I am acutely aware of the struggles young artists go through on their journey to finding their unique, artistic voice. I teach with this understanding of how young creative minds think and work and have catered my class flow accordingly.

When I teach, I don't show your children how to draw just like ME, but instead I'm gently guiding them to discover their own style and creative voice as individual artists. I also prioritize community building so that my students can grow together and learn from their peers while making lasting relationships and opportunities to share and collaborate on projects.

All of these core values are taught using my "Star Student" characters I created to help inspire my students to grow in all areas of their lives as artists. Each character represents an art/life skill or education standard, and students are encouraged to collect as many as they can throughout each course. Some stars, like the "Co-Star", is awarded to the students who co-teach a drawing demonstration to the class, while the "Rockstar" is awarded to students who go above and beyond with their assignments.

I can't wait to meet you in my stellar classroom soon!
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of drawing. We start with discussing why artists have created art since the beginning, and then move to light and shading studies, positive and negative space, composition, perspective, human anatomy, and life drawing!

All of these lessons include a variety examples of pivotal artists throughout history and how we can learn from the past to pave the way as the next generation of artists!

10 Lessons

Lesson 1:
Why Draw?
This first week lesson is about why artists create art! I find it incredibly helpful to learn about why my students want to create art so that I can aid them in getting the most out of my courses. We will look at a variety of reasons why artists create art, such as to give instruction, to make others laugh, as a form of therapy, and many others! Then we will do activities that show each student that while they may have similar goals as another artist, they each have their own artistic voice!

Lesson 2:
Light & Shadows
In this lesson, I teach students how to create form through shading techniques and adding textures to simple shapes. This is a really fun lesson because students will be able to turn a simple circle into a three-dimensional sphere using four different shading techniques! Students will also learn how to collect an assortment of textures found in their own homes.

Lesson 3:
Positive & Negative Space
This is one of my favorite lessons because students start to see how optical illusions and positive and negative space is used in everyday life! We'll look at artists like M.C. Escher for inspiration, as well as some well-known logos through fun art games. Students will also create their own logos and tessellations inspired by the art I'll show them in class.

Lesson 4:
Composition
In my favorite lesson of them all, in this class students learn how directors and illustrators use composition to change the emotional balance of their art pieces. Students will get to scribble out a collection of emotions and learn about how certain emotions have artistic similarities with other ones. Drawing emotions may seem very complicated, but with my simple activities anyone can do it!
