Class Experience

A fun two-part class I've had great success with in real life. Learners begin with a simple template of a human figure (4 options provided for students/parents to print) and transform it into a finished piece of dynamic black-and-white comic book style art. First, we brainstorm costume ideas, which is always a blast; What is their superpower, if any? Their theme? Their props and gadgets? To cape or not to cape? Then we apply those ideas to outfit the figure of choice using pencil. By class two we are ready to finish penciling our sketch and learn how to DIY transfer that rough image to a fresh piece of paper - and then on to inking! No art training is required, but I do always try to touch on bigger art and design concepts such as perspective and anatomy as I teach.

Learning Goals

The main focus of this class is to show that learning art disciplines doesn't have to be a chore, it can be fun. By the end of the course, each Learner should have their own inked black and white superhero drawing that they are proud of.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I would like parents to know that, although some superheroes use guns, I do not allow them as elements of a costume. I'm okay with lasers, swords, claws, and supernatural powers, but I like to keep real-world firearms, blood, etc. out of the equation.
Supply List
Learners will require the following to attend this class;
- A good ol' #2 wooden pencil (mechanical pencils are also fine for drawing, but a traditional lead will be needed as well).
- An eraser (a pencil eraser is fine, but I recommend a larger eraser as well simply for ease of use and longevity, those big pink ones are fine)
- A pencil sharpener
- Printer paper or equivalent, at least 15 sheets (paper quality for printing and sketching is not at all important)
- Access to a color printer
Optional;
- One to three sheets of higher quality white paper. If the Learner wants the final piece to look a little more professional). I use "hot press" (smooth surface) bristol board, but I understand it is expensive. Your local art supply store may have a less costly alternative.
- A kneaded eraser (those stretchy gray ones). Again, not necessary, but they are very gentle to paper when eliminating pencil lines.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I am a professional freelance illustrator, designer, and writer with over 30 years in the art business. I began my career writing, penciling, and inking a comic book called "The Tick" and went on to work for clients such as Eminem (rapper), Tommy Lee (drummer), Red Robin Restaurants, Bentley Motorcars, and have done quite a bit of film promotion for Artisan Entertainment and other studios. I truly enjoy teaching art to young people. It gives me so much joy that I have volunteered my time at schools and mentored underserved talents. Not every developing mind works the same way, and I like to speak the language of the child I'm teaching, I want to see their point of view and help them grow and express themselves. I have taught a "Draw Your Own Superhero" class at a local small school, and I think that would translate well to online teaching. I would also love to be able to offer an "Anatomy for Beginners" class, and a "Life Drawing for Beginners" class for those kids who excell in art but are underserved in their usual learning environment. Fun Eli 5 Stone fact: My middle name really is a digit! (but you’ll have to come to class to find out why!)
