Class Experience

Children in this age group are learning about the alphabet. Drawing is a great way to express knowledge of letters and sounds, as well as to make connections to letters in the real world.

In this ongoing class, we will focus on one letter of the alphabet per class. Each session will open with a mini presentation which may include: sounding out the letter, identifying objects that begin with the letter, and introducing a shape that we might use to draw the picture. We will then write the letter and draw a picture about the letter. I will guide students through the drawing process using basic geometric shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle) as the basis for the drawing. Students may color int he line drawing with whatever drawing supplies they have. Students can follow along with the step-by-step instructions or interpret the drawing in their own way.

The structure of the class is as follows: 2 minute to check-in and review materials, 3 minutes to present lesson, 25 minutes to practice writing the letter and drawing a picture associated with that letter, (students may discuss process and ask questions during this time), and 5 minutes to share.

Lesson plan sequence:
Week 1) A/Ant
Week 2) B/Butterfly
Week 3) C/Car
Week 4) D/Dinosaur
Week 5) E/Elephant
Week 6) F/Frog
Week 7) G/Gate
Week 8) H/Hippo
Week 9) I/Iguana
Week 10) J/Jelly Fish
Week 11) K/Koala
Week 12) L/Ladybug
Week 13) M/Moth
Week 14) N/Nest
Week 15) O/Octopus
Week 16) P/Pig
Week 17) Q/Queen
Week 18) R/Rabbit
Week 19) S/Snail
Week 20) T/Turtle
Week 21) U/Umbrella
Week 22) V/Vegetables
Week 23) W/Whale
Week 24)Y/Yellow
Week 25) Z/Zebra

Students can follow along with instructor or interpret the subject matter in their own way. There is a range of ability in this age group. Some students are learning to hold the pencil and are just beginning to scribble and form shapes, while others are adept at holding the pencil and are able to form shapes and recognizable objects. I strive to create a classroom environment in which students feel supported and encouraged wherever they may be.

I look forward to drawing with you!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Molly Cranch and I am an arts educator, fine artist and children's book author-illustrator. I have taught art in a variety of settings, including public and private schools, international schools, and museums and art centers. My educational background includes a BFA in painting from Washington University and a certificate in art education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as certifications in children's yoga. I have taught at the elementary and middle school level and I have a lot of experience working with dual language, ESL, diverse learners, and early childhood students. I have a lot of experience working specifically with children with dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism.

My teaching philosophy is inclusive and creative. I believe that the arts are essential to a child's development and growth, and that every child has the ability to learn. I think is important to teach students skills and the foundations of visual art, but to leave room for inquiry and creative interpretation. I have a passion for arts integration, which is a collaborative approach to curriculum development. Over the years I have worked with many other teachers to develop curriculum integrating the arts with other subject areas such as STEM, language arts and social-emotional learning.

In addition to teaching, I am a professional artist. My paintings have been exhibited in galleries all across the United States! I also have my first children's book coming out in 2024.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, painting, cooking and practicing yoga. I am a mom and I love spending time with my family. Together, we take trips and explore all the wonders of the city we live in.
