In this course, we will talk about how to draw the human face. We will start with the basics of shading, followed by facial proportions and how to draw the main features of the face. This is a fairly fast-paced class, so some background experience in drawing or shading is recommended, but not required! Class 1: We will talk about shading and practice on basic 3D shapes. Class 2: We will discuss proportions of the face and practice drawing facial features. Class 3: We will discuss the grid method and begin laying out our portraits. Class 4: Students will continue laying out their portrait in class. We will discuss shading again and talk about common mistakes to avoid. Class 5: Students will continue working on shading their portraits. We will discuss stylistic differences in portraiture. Class 6: Students’ portraits should be complete or almost complete. They will be given some work time to finish and then we will have a longer critique sharing our portraits and discussing them. By the end of the course, students will have completed a portrait of a person of their choice. My lessons typically include a 15-20 minute lecture with an example drawing, followed by 20-30 minutes of work time and a 10-15 minute follow-up. I like to provide a good chunk of work time in-class so that students can chat and exchange ideas with peers, as well as receive feedback from me. Since this class is based in technical practice rather than projects, critiques will mostly involve group discussions of accuracy, individual strengths and weaknesses, and stylistic differences.
Learning Goals
Students will participate in exercises that will help them to:
1. Draw more accurately
2. Broaden their art-making toolset
3. Develop their own unique style

Teacher expertise and credentials
*ON HIATUS*
Hi! I’m Brynn, and I graduated from BYU in Spring 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Studio Art. I am an artist by trade and have a strong background in drawing and printmaking. I live with my husband in the beautiful Utah Valley, though I was raised in the Arizona heat! I love watching TV, doing puzzles, and of course, making art.
I firmly believe that anyone can learn to create art that they are proud of. All it takes is the desire to learn and a little old fashioned hard work! In addition, I believe that making art is not all about good technique; however, good technique can be used as a tool to broaden the scope of what we can create. This is why I focus on teaching good technique alongside principles of creativity so that students can take what they've learned and develop their own style!
