Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
This is a class for learners who already have some practice drawing animals, and would like to challenge themselves with more action, movement, and dynamic poses!

In each class meeting we'll draw quick sketches of several different poses.
Ms. Kristy demonstrates and draws along with the class. Instruction is flexible so that students can work on developing fluid drawing skills (while still having help & support).

Here's what's coming up:

TUESDAY CLASS:
Nov. 5: Pangolin!
Nov. 12: Lion!
Nov. 19: Fjord horse!
Nov. 26: Mini cow!

FRIDAY CLASS:
Nov. 1: Bald uakari! (primate)
Nov. 8: Slow loris! (fuzzy primate)
Nov. 15: Goblin shark!
Nov. 22: Colugo/flying lemur!
Nov. 29: NO CLASS (Thanksgiving holiday)

What is a normal class like?
-- We'll have several photos for reference. Ms. Kristy demonstrates how to sketch 3-4 different poses during class.

-- I recommend that students draw along with me for the first sketch, but then they may choose to continue adding detail, move on with me, or try a different pose on their own.

-- Every few minutes, I'll pause and ask if anyone would like me to check their work (optional).

-- At the very end of class, we take a few minutes to share our work with each other (also optional!).

My teaching style is relaxed and supportive! Although we have a significant amount of focused instruction, I love it when students get to chat and form connections with one another.

I believe in meeting each learner where they are, and guiding their work to become a little better each time. My goal is to help students not only draw a particular animal in a particular pose, but to help them learn observational drawing strategies that will allow them to draw anything they wish!

I have taught drawing for many years, and in my observation the most effective way to teach good drawing skills is to demonstrate them. Drawing together with my students gives me the perfect forum to illustrate drawing techniques while helping them to build the critical thinking and observational skills they need to continue working on their own. My goal is to build my students' skills and confidence as young artists!
