Class Experience

In this one-time art course, students will learn how to draw Mei Lee as the Red Panda from Disney's Turning Red. Students will learn techniques for providing detail, depth, texture, and volume to their drawing while receiving step-by-step instruction on how to draw a realistic version of the Red Panda. We will cover tips for drawing accurate body shapes, highly expressive cartoon-style faces, and working with small details (such as the frayed edges of the Red Panda's fur) during class time.

While step-by-step instruction will be provided, students are also welcome to add their own creativity to their drawings and work at their own pace. For more advanced students, additional tips and tricks will be provided during class time for backgrounds and accessories.

As the movie, Turning Red, is about experiencing and overcoming embarrassing moments commonly experienced by children during their formative and pre-teen years, there will also be an open discussion about this subject for students in class. Students are never required to participate in informal discussion but are always welcome to do so if they choose. Any students who wish to remain silent during class time are welcome as well.

My classes are all highly interactive and usually we share a surprise at the end, such as a mystery bag opening or a magic trick.

PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLMENT:

FAQ/Policies

- ONE STUDENT PER SPOT. If enrolling multiple students, please register each of them. Multiple students appearing under the same spot will result in students being removed from the classroom.

- All my Outschool classes have a limited refund policy. Transfers, no-shows, late arrivals, cancellations, refunds and make-up requests CANNOT be accommodated within 24 hours of class time. No exceptions. Class recordings are available upon request for missed sections if the class proceeds with other students.

- Teachers on Outschool are independent contractors who cannot control nor troubleshoot technical issues with Zoom or the Outschool platform. Please test your connection with your device in advance of class time and contact Outschool directly at support@outschool.com for help with technical issues.

- Live sections with no present learners are cancelled after 10 minutes of class time.

- I do not offer sibling discounts for public classes at this time, however, I do offer a small discount for private classes when registering 2 or more students for a month or more. Please message me for more details.

- These are WYSIWIG art classes: What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get! All thumbnails, promotional materials, class resources, and in-class drawings are original art produced by Marie (the teacher). Students are often offered a variety of reference images and resources from popular art styles to choose so they can draw in their preferred style, but special focus is paid to developing student's original art skills and not simply copying another artist. All images, drawings or other art resources are never taken from other artists to use as promotional materials.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to approve their age and level appropriate drawing skills through step-by-step instruction and free drawing time, while also talking about the lessons taught in Disney's "Turning Red" movie.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Marie, a full-time teacher and artist. I love a wide variety of art and discovering new ways to foster learning through creativity. I believe having fun and laughing while learning is important because it encourages self confidence and joy. I always try my best to make my classes fun, engaging, and a welcoming experience for every student.

I have taught classroom Art as a certified educator in US schools for 10+ years from ages pre-school through high school, as well as teaching & tutoring in single and group lessons for Art, ESL, SPED, Social Studies, Math, Science, Technology and gifted students. I have also designed and taught in a number of summer camps. In 2017, I was awarded Teacher of the Year honors at my school. I have taught individual and small-group art lessons both online and in my community since 2018, as well as creating and selling my own art to buyers on every continent (well, except Antarctica!)

I have a BA in Education, and have continued professional certification experience through outside professional training programs, conferences and seminars.

In my spare time I enjoy nature, travel, games, and playing with my dogs. I have transitioned to full-time, online private teaching as I believe it allows teachers to develop curriculum which better meets the needs and interests of today's students by directly engaging with the students more thoroughly. The individual and small group settings allow teachers to cater lessons to students needs and goals intuitively. Private teaching online has also allowed me more time and flexibility to spend with my family. I truly believe online learning is a critical part of the future of education, and I'm excited to share some class time with you!
