Class Experience

Are you interested in learning how to sketch dragons in different poses, with realistic proportions? In this class you will learn head size and shape sizes in relationship to the dragon character within the composition. We will practice dragon modeling, proportions, practice drawing from action lines and use gesture drawing to create more realistic anatomical dragon drawings. Students will engage in guided drawing lessons with the teacher to practice intermediate drawing techniques. These drawing techniques can be used outside of class to practice and draw your own unique dragon drawings. Each class will introduce a different technique as seen below. The class is hands on drawing with intermittent pauses to discuss and ask questions. Most sections will be scheduled once a week. Each section has six meeting times.

The majority of class time will be spent doing hands-on practice together. Students will follow along with teacher-led demonstrations that teach proportion "formulas," and use reference action lines and measurement to practice drawing.

Classes will cover the following topics:

Lesson 1: Modeling and Proportions of the Dragon within a composition
Lesson 2: line work and adding in formulas as well as measuring with your pencil
Lesson 3: Drawing a dragon with texture marks, points of reference and backgrounds
Lesson 4: Drawing a dragon with previous modeling techniques but also learning about texture and line quality
Lesson 5: Setting up a composition with 2 dragons or more
Lesson 6: Original character drawing using the previous techniques taught.
Learning Goals
We will practice drawing proportionate dragon figures in still and action poses, use of line and value. The student will learn to look at proportion and measure parts in relationship to other parts of the drawing. Composition will be taught as well as gesture and modeling.
