Description
Class Experience
Drawing birds and pets together is the goal of this class. We will be using simple shapes like circles and triangles to compose pictures of birds. These skills are fundamentally repeatable for the child to continue to draw birds for years. Drawing one animal per class with penciled erasers. If the student want to use a pen or markers with pencil, this is fine. Week One Draw Black Capped Chickadees. Two Draw A Golden Retriever. Three Drawing To be Announced. ...
This class is taught in English.
Students will understand using simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares to make animals. These skills will show children how to see an animal and begin to break the animal into a collection of shapes. This series is about birds, animals, and pets. I plan to draw one animal during each class with the students live. My camera set up will allow the student to see my hand on the drawing creating. The student will follow step by step until we each have a drawing of the animal or bird. By the end of the class learner will be able to draw better on their own, and gain a new way of drawing, which will stay with them for years.
I have been a life long creator with the special emphasis on drawing. This class has the raw and valuable fundaments to teach how to think and express in shapes and forms. These fundamental skills are very transferable into other ways of creating. I teach the same method of drawing as I learned at about the age of 7 years old. When I went to study art for my BA and MA I still used these fundamentals which I shall be teaching. For example how to see simple shapes in complex animals. Knowing how to see these forms allows to re-build them as art. The ways to shade, hatch and cross hatch. How to develop a sense of your own style.
None assigned, but I would love to see any drawings done between classes by the students. They could hold them up to the camera for any one to see.
My teaching will be focused on using regular pencils for all drawing. I will allow other media as well for coloring the drawings. Students will need several pencils, a couple of erasers, and at least 8 sheets of paper. A child safe pencil sharpener would be great. Extra supplies which are helpful: a ruler, pencil sharpener. extra pencils and extra erasers. There are pencil sets of artist pencils which include 4H, 3H, 2H, 1H, HB, (or a common #2 pencil) 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, which gives the student more control over their tonal values (light to very dark) when they draw. These sets always make a difference even if there are only one or two of these artist pencils available. Other art supplies for coloring are great like color pencils and crayons. Paint is fine for use in the class, but parents should put down extra protective material like card board or a drop cloth to protect floors, carpet, and furniture. Older clothes being worn by the children might be best too.
Assessment are as students wish to share. Because I have taught some college and university classes and I have a BA in fine art from Wingate College, Wingate NC. and a Masters Degree in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah GA, I can give a letter grade to any students who take my class. If students are taking my classes as part of home schooling or some other appropriate official schooling, I may be able to offer a credited letter grade for students for any art classes. Please contact me on us trying to work through gaining official accreditation through your child's school.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
No parental guidance is needed, but some parents use their house hold printer to make a couple of different copies of each of the drawings from the class. This allows the children to hand color each of the pictures little differently. I hope the parents will take the time to look at each of the drawings we do. This feedback is important for creative people.
