Students who work more slowly/meticulously may wish to work outside of class time.Class Experience
In this ongoing class, we'll spend several consecutive sessions working on a larger drawing or painting project! -- Each artwork is inspired by a classic story, fairy tale, myth, or legend. -- Lessons build from week to week for 3-4 sessions, as outlined in our syllabus (below). Students get to practice creating the whole artwork, from start to finish: idea generation, sketching, refining, and adding color/shadows. Here's what's coming up! November's theme is: Weird Thanksgiving! While the family has a cozy feast downstairs in the dining room, a stranger scene is set amongst the cobwebs of the attic. Skeletal pilgrims attend a weird feast of zombie turkey, screaming pumpkins, and green beans marching themselves around the table. Talk about a strange holiday! Nov. 1: Sketches!! "Thumbnail" and project sketches. Nov. 8: Finish details & begin outlining (or painting). Nov. 15: Add shading/color (or finish painting). Nov. 22: NO CLASS!! (Thanksgiving holiday) Nov. 29: New project!! What does a normal class look like? -- Students may follow closely with the teacher as I demonstrate step-by-step, but those who wish to branch out and create their own unique compositions are encouraged to do so! -- Ms. Kristy demonstrates particular media and techniques relevant to each project, but support is provided for both those following along, and those who branch off. A multi-session project will follow this sequence: LESSON 1: --- Class brainstorming session, suggest ideas, plan small rough draft sketches. LESSON 2: --- Sketch image on larger final paper. Include details and full background. (Reference photos used as needed.) LESSON 3: --- Begin adding color or shading. --- Teacher demos for the particular subject & media chosen; core strategies for all will remain consistent.** LESSON 4 (as needed): --- Finish artwork! Students may need all of this time or may be given an extra "challenge" if they finish early. --- We may begin suggesting ideas for the next project if time allows! **Core strategies that we'll explore regardless of media include?? -- Creating a dynamic composition! -- Emphasizing the focal point -- Using value & color to create contrast! -- Creating a sense of unity! -- Using color, shading, and depth of field to create a sense of space/3D! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WHAT IF I SIGN UP "LATE"? -- Student who join the class in the middle of a project can still be accommodated! -- I'll provide our rough draft sketch so they can complete their outline before class begins, or work on their sketch during class. -- Latecomers may choose to simplify the image or work in a smaller size to more easily catch up or finish with the class. -- I WILL be able to give feedback and help during class-- I will NOT be able to give step-by-step sketching demonstrations for latecomers. Please judge what your learner is comfortable with and consider the timing-- I'm happy to answer any questions to get you started!! Is this class appropriate for brand-new artists? -- Probably not, but I have plenty of other fun and instructive classes! This class is best suited for young artists who are already fairly comfortable with drawing (perfection is NOT required!). -- Any class from my "Draw Together" series would be a great place to get more comfortable with realistic drawing. "Fantastic Backgrounds" is the closest in theme to this class. You can find all of my classes here on my profile, and of course feel free to message me with any questions :) My teacher profile, with ALL my listed classes: https://outschool.com/teachers/Kristine-Mankin?usid=3u0MdGLD&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&utm_campaign=share_leader_link

Ms. Kristy has been a teacher for almost 20 years, with four of those exclusively on Outschool. I teach realistic animal and figure drawing, always with the goal of helping students develop the observational drawing skills that will allow them to draw anything they wish! Lately, some of my favorite classes have been more imaginative and illustrative, but I always wish we had MORE TIME!! This class folds in many of the skills we use in my other classes, while allowing us plenty of time to add all the detail our hearts desire :).
