Class Experience

In this class, we will learn some interesting facts and background about the Giant Panda of China, and then follow a step by step process to create our drawing. This class is suited for both beginners and practicing artists, as each step is clearly shown and explained, and both beginning and intermediate/advanced methods are demonstrated.

After introductions and guidelines, I will share photos and/or a short video and information about the Giant Panda, both to learn about this amazing animal and also to highlight the importance of careful observation of a subject in the art making process. I will then start the drawing step by step using a second camera, and learners will follow along. Microphones are usually muted during this time to reduce background noise, and learners are encouraged to raise their hands anytime to be called on if they have questions or want feedback.

Along the way, students will learn about and practice a variety of useful pencil drawing techniques, including identifying foundational shapes at the beginning of a drawing, proportion and perspective tips and tricks, a couple of different pencil holding techniques to achieve different textures, and how to create depth and dimensionality in our drawings using shading, value, and pencil line. We will end the class by having an opportunity to share the finished drawings, as well as ask any last questions or share feedback on the art.
