I am taking a break from Outschool during the months of March, April, May, and June. Stay tuned for classes in July. :) My son and I enjoy reading the Zoey and Sassafras series. Right away I knew, I needed to start a science and book club. Zoey, with her cat, Sassafras, comes upon a family secret. Zoey and Sassafras can talk to animals. If that is not great enough, Zoey and her mom help magical animals recover from injuries or ailments. Real science is integrated into each of the Zoey and Sassafras books. In this first book, students learn about the scientific method in a magical way. Students will read chapters between each class meeting over the 4-week time span. During each meeting, we will have a lively discussion about the last chapters read. We will have fun imagining what it would be like to talk to animals. Students will learn how to strengthen their reading skills, especially their predicting skills through engaging discussions. Students will make a magical picture. We will also practice the scientific method with hands-on activities. That's not all. We will start a veterinarian journal as we learn about animal diets and classifications. This twirl of literature and science is energizing and captivating. Before the first meeting please read chapters 1-3. Day 1: Introductions Discuss the format of our class Art project: Magical Pictures Throughout the art project, we will discuss chapters 1-3. Mammals vs Reptiles Homework: Read chapters 4-7 Day 2: Hello Discuss chapters 4-8 and the idea of failure Create a Veterinary Journal: Start with snakes and dragons Carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore Homework: Read chapters 8-12 Day 3: Hello Discuss chapters 8-12 Interactive scientific method notes Plan and set-up a marshmallow experiment Homework: Read chapters 13-16 Game Day 4: Hello Discuss chapters 13-16 Share experimental observations Write conclusions together Celebrate the conclusion of the book with games Sign-up for the 2nd book in the series, Monsters and Mold, and receive a $10 refund. https://outschool.com/classes/monsters-and-mold-science-and-book-club-uX9tCBzD?usid=CkPCuZaL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Book Series Trailer: https://youtu.be/gr7a82qV7RA Description from the book's website: Dragons and Marshmallows (Book One) In the first book of this series, Zoey discovers a glowing photo and learns an amazing secret.
