What's included
5 live meetings
10 in-class hoursClass Experience
What will be taught? Learners will be introduced to tabletop role-playing games (RPGs) through Dragonbane, a beginner-friendly and fun alternative to D&D. They’ll learn character creation, basic game mechanics, and collaborative storytelling, while developing essential life skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. What topics will you cover? Introduction to RPGs: Basic rules and gameplay mechanics made simple for new players. Character Creation: Design your own adventurer or choose from pre-made options. Collaborative Storytelling: Work together to shape the narrative and solve challenges. Fantasy Adventure Basics: Explore immersive settings, face challenges, and earn rewards. How is your class structured? This five-session class is designed to be engaging, modular, and accessible: June 5th: Create characters and learn the easy-to-understand rules of Dragonbane. June 6th: Start exploring the Misty Vale in your first adventure. June 7th: Learn about adventure sites and choose your next challenge as a team. June 8th: Continue exploring the chosen adventure site. June 9th: Complete the quest, solve challenges, and (hopefully) claim your rewards! Each session includes self-contained adventures, making the game easy for new players to jump into without needing prior experience. How will you teach? I’ll serve as the Game Master, narrating the story, guiding learners through gameplay, and explaining rules in simple, beginner-friendly terms. Sessions will include interactive storytelling, dynamic challenges, and group discussions, supported by visuals and thematic music to enhance immersion. What's your teaching style? My teaching style is approachable and flexible, designed to make learning Dragonbane fun and engaging for beginners. I focus on building confidence in new players while creating a safe and supportive environment for creative collaboration. How much will learners get to interact with you? Learners will engage with me continuously throughout each session as I: Facilitate character creation and explain rules. Narrate the story and guide gameplay. Encourage collaboration and moderate discussions. This class is highly interactive, ensuring learners feel involved and supported every step of the way.

Dragonbane is a role-playing game, much like DnD. The objective is to have fun and create a good story together.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree from University of Alberta
I teach social studies and role-playing games. I have 35 years of experience as a Game-master of table-top roleplaying games and Live-Action Roleplay organizer and facilitator for people of ages 7+. I used that experience in my teaching, pioneering the use of games and simulations to help my students understand government, economics and social and cultural processes.
My key principle for teaching is that students learn by doing and experiencing the subject matter. Students in my classes can thus expect a lot of playing games, regardless of content, because it is fun but also because we learn better together that way.
When I'm not teaching I...play more games because...let's face it, I'm a big geek.
