Class Experience

Dungeons and Dragons is is collaborative storytelling game. It is a game of vast possibilities where you learn to think carefully, to plan, to strategize, to persuade, to resolve conflict, and so much more, all while exploring memorable locales, meeting fascinating NPCs, and defeating truly frightening enemies.

In this course, we will play through "Dragon of Icespire Peak", an official D&D module for beginners (though I will modify it significantly). This module will take your character from Level 1 to about Level 5 as you explore the region surrounding the city of Neverwinter, battle with frightening creatures, get to know the citizens of the local towns, and unfold a story of adventure and intrigue. Note: this is a medium length campaign

This course will give students a great deal of experience in the details, rules, and mechanics of dungeons and dragons but, again, I do not recommend this as a student's first campaign. In the course students will also grow close with the other students they are adventuring with and learn more to better communicate, work together, and treat one another with respect. After completing this course, students will be confident in the rules of D&D and can continue on to another adventure or begin running one of their own for friends. Please note that this is an ongoing course as it is impossible to give a specific number of meetings because that depends how the story develops in the hands of the students. Compared to other campaigns, though, this is considered a long campaign (meaning likely 6+ months). If you must leave at some point, please don't worry about your fellow classmates. We will exit your character and bring in another student in a way that progresses the story.

Note: You must have your video on for these sessions and be unmuted as often as you can. D&D is a game of community and collaboration, of experiencing, struggling, and laughing together. If you cannot actively participate, please do not enroll. Reach out to me if you have questions about this.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Though there is combat in this game, it is described in words, not images. I will also ask and require students to be conscious of their descriptions, avoiding anything grotesque or inhumane.
Supply List
Students will need a completed character which I will check before the first session (students who completed 102 with me have one but may create another using dndbeyond.com). Please do not hesitate to message me with questions about character concepts or rules.

Optional: a copy of the Player's Handbook (https://www.amazon.com/Players-Handbook-Dungeons-Dragons-Wizards/dp/0786965606/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=player%27s+handbook&qid=1609709577&sr=8-3).

If they cannot purchase this, they can access a copy of the Basic Rules online for free: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
