Have a blast building and breeding virtual dragons! Learn about heredity, but instead of breeding pea plants like Gregor Mendel, students complete a simulation via Google Slides to breed dragons and learn how dominant and recessive traits are passed down through multiple generations. The results of certain dragon characteristics resemble Mendel’s few experiments. Students will learn about male and female dragon genotypes, offspring traits, probabilities, and how to use Punnett squares. They will also learn the background information about Mendel’s experiments. On the last day, we will also briefly cover mutations and cloning. Day 1: Definitions of Genetics, traits, dominant, recessive, phenotype, genotype, Punnett squares. Duplicate Mendel’s first experiment Day 2: Review, Heredity, Inherited traits, learned traits, environmental influences Duplicate Mendel’s second experiment Day 3: Duplicate Mendel’s third experiment Mutations, cloning,
Learning Goals
Using their knowledge of genetics and inherited traits, students will be able to identify potential traits of dragon offspring with Punnett squares.
