Students will learn a variety of techniques for devising original theater, practice collaboration and teamwork, and develop skills as writers, actors, movers, and choreographers.
I spent a year training under the artistic director of Voices of Now, the devised theater for social change program at Arena Stage, and I co-directed four student ensembles. I wrote my bachelor's thesis on devised theater, which included directing a new devised play.
Students will be expected to spend about 15-20 minutes each week responding to a writing or drawing prompt outside of class and will need to share their work with me before the following class. (Students are always welcome to spend more time writing, if they would like to.)
- A way to write or type during and outside of class - Materials for drawing/creating 2-D art - On day 3, learners will need a piece of fabric that they can move through the air (a scarf, pillowcase, napkin, etc.) - Learners should come to class in clothes they can move in comfortably and should have water nearby
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The learners in this course will write the material for our play, and I will compile it into a script. If you have any specific concerns about content, please reach out to me privately as early as possible.
