Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
This class will provide 1-on-1 tutoring to assist learners with writing their personal essays and supplemental essays for college applications. The target audience for this class is high school students who are applying to college and would like help with their college essays. Learners can bring a piece of writing that they have already been working on, or I can help take learners from the brainstorming stage all the way to the final draft of the essay. I believe in the process model of writing. I take learners through all the stages of writing including, pre-writing (brainstorming), drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. I will help learners make sure that their personal statement gives colleges a sense of who they are and what they have to offer the school community. I will also help learners enjoy the process and reduce the pressure they may feel to write this essay. This class will have short lessons of direct instruction on the topics listed below, but the majority of the class will involve discussion and feedback on the learner's writing. The short lessons will utilize slides, quotes, videos and other tools to help learners write the college essay.

Topics that will be covered include:

What colleges are looking for in the personal statement (Determining what should be in the personal statement)

Dos and don'ts of the college essay. (Tips on what you should and should not do in your essay)

The parts of the writing process and what should happen during each part

Finding your voice and setting the appropriate tone for your audience

Effective sentence and paragraph structure

Grammar concepts for proofreading
