Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
In addition to tutoring junior high and high school English and ELA SAT prep for more than 10 years, I love leading book clubs and reading groups with teens & tweens. Reading & writing are passions of mine and I love to see a learner engage with a text because we found the right book for them. I have a Master's degree in Instructional Design that supports creating engaging content that is developmentally appropriate for K-12 learners.
Assignments include:
-Reading up to 3 chapters weekly
-Creative Writing Prompts (one or more paragraphs, each class)
-Vocabulary Worksheets (to go with each reading assignment)
-5 Quizzes covering 4-6 chapters each
-19th Century Research Project
-Additional Creative Projects (Characterization, Epitaphs)
-3 Writing Assignments (Creative, Persuasive & Informative)
-Unit Test

All homework except for readings can be submitted once for half-points back at any point while the class is still active and the only homework that has due dates are the readings. For example, if a student got a 70 on a first quiz attempt, but 100 the second time, the student would have a final score of 85. Writing assignments and projects will have various time commitments.

3 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Common Sense Media rates the novel as being appropriate for children ages 13+ due to violence & scariness, romance & sexual themes, and alcohol/drug use.

Throughout a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, adventurers engage in combat. Weapon use (swords, bows & arrows, magic spells) are common.
