Dr. Seuss & the States of Matter: Enjoy a Story & Make Gooey Oobleck!(Ages 5-10)
What's included

45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this ooey, gooey, and fun cross-curricular (reading and science) class, your child will listen to an engaging story by Dr. Seuss called "Bartholomew and the Oobleck." Afterwards, students will make some oobleck and learn the science behind it. What is oobleck, you ask? Oobleck is what is known as a non-Newtonian fluid. It has properties of both a liquid and a solid. The closest comparison is slime, though they are not quite the same. In teaching this class, I will briefly cover story elements (characters, setting, events, problem, and solution) during the reading of the story, while asking questions and allowing for interactive discussion of story events. Then, when we make the oobleck, I will teach science skills such as states of matter, the properties of states of matter, and finally the properties of non-Newtonian fluids. As such, this class teaches both reading and science concepts. I will start the lesson with the read-aloud and discuss the related reading concepts. Then, we will make ooey, gooey oobleck and students will have time to play with and interact with it. We will discuss their observations and whether they feel it is a liquid or a solid and why. My teaching style is to keep students engaged, having fun, and interacting with the content and each other. I feel that this style has the greatest impact and allows students to grasp and retain as much knowledge as possible. There is no prior knowledge or experience required. Siblings: You must purchase a separate enrollment for each child that is participating, even if two children are working on the same device. This is an Outschool Policy.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
I have another version of this course for 3-6 year olds. That course has very similar content, but is broken into two days to accommodate the shorter attention span of younger learners. If your child is 5 or 6, you can choose which version your child attends because there is some overlap in the age range between the two versions. You know your child best. Feel free to enroll in the option that you feel best fits your learner. Please ensure that if your child is 5 or 6 that he or she can remain focused and attentive for the entire 55 minutes should you decide to select this one day, 55 minute option.
Supply List
✦ A large bowl or other container for mixing and preparing the oobleck ✦ 2 cups of cornstarch ✦ 1 cup of water ✦ 3 drops of food coloring (optional) ✦ newspapers, a towel, or a tablecloth to keep your table clean (optional)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified, veteran teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience. Though I have spent my career teaching all subjects to elementary students, I have a passion for science. I love sharing my passion and knowledge with young learners; hopefully I am able to inspire their love of science as well.
