Class Experience

Students begin by understanding the definition of perseverance and by thinking of a person they know (or a famous person they know of) that has shown perseverance in their lives. Students will share their answers with the class using sentence starters.

Next, we will learn about the interesting life of Dr Seuss. Theodor Seuss Geisel had a fascinating life full of ups and downs. Students will identify growth mindset traits in Dr Seuss as they learn about his life. Students will take notes in a companion google doc worksheet and will share their thoughts during class discussion prompts.

Finally, students will write a paragraph in response to the following prompt: At Dartmouth College, despite being well liked, Ted was voted "least likely to succeed." Yet, he worked hard to write his books, and continued to pursue a book career even after his first book was rejected by more than 20 publishers because it was "too different." How did Ted show tenacity as he continued to submit his work to publishers even after all of the rejection? How would you feel? Have you ever had to keep trying something over and over again before you got it right?

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching students growth mindset. I developed and taught this lesson as a school wide advisory lesson for middle school students. I believe students are empowered when they can connect their own story and struggles with another's.
