Class Experience

Together we will read Hana's Suitcase, by Karen Levine
Tokyo, Japan: In the year 2000 a suitcase arrived at a Holocaust education center from the Auschwitz museum. It bears the name of Hana Brady and the date: May 16, 1931. The center's curator Fumiko Ishioka is determined to find out more about Hana and her suitcase. This true story leads Fumiko on a worldwide search for clues and answers.

Students will be responsible for completing the reading ahead of time. During class, we will discuss the significance of the readings.
The questions asked will include questions on vocabulary, comprehension, and history.

Each lesson will include time for introductions, greetings, and a synopsis of the previous week's readings.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This book discusses the hardships of the Holocaust. Unfortunately, our main character Hana dies at Auschwitz, as do her parents. This will be a tough topic to discuss as Hana was in the same age group as learners in this book. We will discuss how her brother finds positivity in the fact that she is still teaching children about the Holocaust today.
