Class Experience

At the end of this course, learners will be able to understand and define:
-Elements of Art (Space, Line, Shape)
-Principles of Design (Pattern, Balance, Emphasis, Rhythm)
-Symbolism & how it is used in art
-The artistic process of Doodling/Automatic Drawing 

There will be a product that will be an example of the learner's understanding of the above concepts. By the end of the course, they will have successfully developed an original, engaging, visual composition that heavily incorporates the highlighted art concepts.

Learners will also develop their technical proficiency in rendering with a pencil/mark-making tool.
Since completing my Bachelors in Visual Art Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, I have been teaching art for the past six years in a variety of settings. The classes I design and instruct are primarily based in the visual arts. I believe in the impact the visual arts can have on a life, community, and even an entire society! Working within the visual arts develops so many essential skills in both younger and older minds. Observation, analysis, synthesis, and creation are only a few of the higher order cognitive learning events taking place when making art, and students will also develop the essential skills of perseverance, knowledge acquisition through personal research, communication and collaboration by discussing, making, and sharing their art in a group setting. 

This particular lesson resonates with me because it teaches the art maker about a LOT of foundational art concepts through a method of creating that almost ANYONE can engage with! Who doesn't love doodling?!
This lesson is designed with enough time for learners to complete each step within the hour set aside for the course. However, as art making is a unique process to each learner, some ideas may require more time to complete, and working outside of class is encouraged if needed. 
-8x10 computer/typing paper (or whatever scrap paper is available for sketching/planning) -9x12 sketchbook-sized paper (for final product/design) -Pencil -Thin Black Marker -Thick Black Marker -Ruler (or any other straight edge)
Learner progress is assessed at the end of each course, with an emphasis mainly on if they are completing each step in time with peers and instructional expectations.  If a learner is behind or ahead, adjustments and feedback will be offered to ensure success by the end of the course.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Learners will be encouraged to choose 3-5 words that they feel represent them, and then will be instructed to find visual symbols of those words. 

For example: for the word 'Strength' a learner could use a picture of a dumbbell. These images can be taken from any source available to them. Books, magazines, and even the internet. 

I highly recommend parental guidance for primary learners during this process. 
Potentially the internet to find reference images for symbols/patterns.
