Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, AP Spanish, and college-level classes. We'll work one-on-one on whatever is keeping your learner from being successful in Spanish class or whatever will propel your learner's achievement in Spanish. My strengths are helping students learn (how to study) vocabulary, understand and apply grammar rules, form correct sentences, and improve pronunciation. Spanish classes are cumulative, like math classes. If you don't understand multiplication, it's impossible to learn exponents, right? Spanish classes move quickly. If you don't learn basic vocabulary, it's nearly impossible to write that PowerPoint presentation in Spanish about technology your teacher just assigned. If you crammed for your quiz on subject pronouns and present-tense verbs, and you forget all of that, it's hard to learn past tense verb conjugations. In my sessions, these are some typical topics: (Spanish words are there to help your learner identify what they need to work on. None of the lists below are complete.) *refreshing knowledge of basic vocabulary (and how to study vocab effectively): question words (quién, qué, dónde, cuándo, por qué, cómo), common verb meanings, prepositions (a, de, con, sin, en, etc.), numbers, basic nouns and adjectives, etc. *reviewing subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, Ud., nosotros, vosotros, ellos, ellas, Uds.)—many students confuse these) and the process of conjugating verbs in a variety of tenses (presente indicativo, pretérito, imperfecto, futuro, condicional, subjuntivo, imperativo, and others) *writing sentences and answering questions: starting with simple "subject + conjugated verb + rest of sentence" and becoming more complex. *using nouns, pronouns, and adjectives together correctly: masculine/feminine/singular/plural agreement, placement of adjectives, definite and indefinite articles (the—el, la, los, las; a, an, some—un, una, unos, unas), possessive adjectives (mi, mis, tu, tus, su, sus, nuestro, vuestro, su, sus) *using direct and indirect object pronouns (me, te, lo, la, le, nos, os, los, las, les, se) *using negative expressions: no, nunca, nada, nadie, etc. *using the subjunctive mood: Quiero que tenga… *using other adjectives/pronouns: **prepositional pronouns: mí, tí, contigo, etc. **possessive pronouns: el mío, el tuyo, etc. **demonstrative pronouns: este, ese, aquel, aquella **relative pronouns: que, quién, cual, etc. **indefinite pronouns (affirmative and negative): alguien, algún, nada, nadie ningún, algo, etc. **reflexive pronouns: me, te, se, nos, os, se and more. **Note: I do not do "Let's Chat" for an hour sessions. I'm not great at chatting in English, French, or Spanish. I will chat in Spanish during a session, of course, but if this is what you're looking for in a session, I'm sure you'll find a tutor who is more comfortable with this format. Before we start, I'll want to know ahead of time what the goal is: Is it to do make-up work and get caught up? Is it to work on the current topic in class? Is it to get ahead in class or go beyond what the class is working on? For IB and AP: do you need mostly test-prep, or do you need help with classwork/tests, too? If a student needs to relearn topics covered earlier, I do recommend a second weekly session in order to work on current topics as well. (My experience tells me that if you wait until April, two sessions a week won't be enough.) I am a grammarian. I will find a way to help any learner who puts in effort to learn rules and exceptions. (Without effort on the student's part, it won't work.) I am The Vocabulady. I will teach your learner effective ways to study vocabulary by modeling and working in the session on learning vocab. Students and parents always tell me, "My learner can take care of vocab on their own." My experience tells me that this probably won't happen. Most students need tutoring because they don't know the words. Not knowing the words keeps them from applying the grammar rules and being able to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish. When I work on vocab with students in sessions, they do much better on all tasks. I am a reading and writing teacher. I can help your learner read the passages for homework and write the text for their project. (I will NOT tell them what to write. I will refer them to their notes, online dictionaries, and other resources. I don't allow students to use Google Translate or any AI on assignments.) Above all, I am patient, kind, empathetic, creative, and flexible. I know that foreign languages aren't easy for many people, and I do not judge people for that. And my jokes are hilarious in any language.
