50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, we will discuss proper usage of popular punctuation. The class will begin with an overview of commas, semicolons, and colons where I will explain the function of each in technical writing. I will explain that a comma replaces the word "and," and I will supply the students with sample sentences that use commas correctly. I will then move on to explain the use of a semicolon to connect two related yet independent clauses and combine them into one sentence. After showing the students examples of properly used semicolons in grammatically correct sentences, I will complete the lesson by instructing the students on where to place a colon in a sentence. They will learn that a colon does not connect complete sentences, as a semicolon does, but rather it introduces a restatement or explanation of the clause that precedes it. After supplying the students with examples of grammatically correct uses of the colon, I will allow students some time to ask questions. Then, I will give the students sentences with improperly used commas, semicolons, and colons for them to correct. Our last activity will be for the students to write their own sentences, purposely including mistakes that their classmates will have the opportunity to correct. The last five minutes of class will be designated for final student questions.
Learning Goals
The students will learn how to form grammatical sentences with the help of commas, semicolons, and colons.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome!
My name is Frayda Sugar, and I am an English teacher. I have taught everything from college literature to middle school technical writing. I love all things creative and witty, and I enjoy bringing lots of energy to the classroom, virtual or actual. My teaching philosophy is to apply academic ideas to students' lives so that they can understand the concept. Then we bring it to the literary text or writing assignment.
