They will practice how to respectfully disagree with others and how to develop their opinions based on facts. Students will learn why some sources are unreliable and how to find appropriate, and reliable sources.
I have been a public school teacher for 7 years and have always taught these skills to my students. We have debates frequently in my classroom and this is a proven method that I have used over and over to teach critical thinking, research skills, and respect for others.
Some homework is required as students are going to need to conduct research on debate topics outside of class each week so that they are ready for the debate. Adequate time will be given between classes to allow for them to conduct this research.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
