This class will survey common and popular literary devices and techniques that add creativity to all types of writing, both creative and technical. Some examples include metaphor, simile, alliteration, rhyme, etc. We will start class by going through a list of 10-15 devices. I will explain each term and give the students an example of each term. I will explain how using figurative language actually helps to explain what the author literally means. After discussing the meanings of each literary device, I will supply the students with a list of writing prompts and have them rewrite the ideas using a literary device. The results will be shared with the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome!
My name is Frayda Sugar, and I am an English teacher. I have taught everything from college literature to middle school technical writing. I love all things creative and witty, and I enjoy bringing lots of energy to the classroom, virtual or actual. My teaching philosophy is to apply academic ideas to students' lives so that they can understand the concept. Then we bring it to the literary text or writing assignment.
For a better glimpse into my creative mind and how I bring the academic ideas to the world outside of the classroom, check out my videos on Instagram @sugarcoated.123.
