With the help of a doll or stuffy, learners will pique and plie through the story of Sleeping Beauty. Dancers will be delighted to learn the ballet version is positively chock full of fairies! We will begin with a lite technical warm up that includes an introduction to French ballet terminology, then move on to dancer + doll partner stretches. After reading James Mayhew's whimsical picture book Ella Bella Ballerina and the Sleeping Beauty, we will pause to discuss and ensure the story is clear, as narrative ballets can sometimes be murky. The remainder of class will be spent on ballet-based drama and movement games, all set to Tchaikovsky's classic score. After class, I will post a Sleeping Beauty activity page and a video link so students can watch excerpts from the ballet performed professionally.
Learning Goals
This class includes music appreciation, a literature discussion, guided self expression activities, and foundational ballet movements. It aims to be a well rounded, multi faceted experience of the culture of ballet, not just the steps.
