Northshore Canine Academy is excited to present Obedience Training At Home, a 4-week flex course! This course is taught by a professional canine trainer/behavioral specialist. It will be fast-paced and packed full of important information, yet exciting and fun! Each week, students will watch video demonstrations of obedience training and will be tasked with homework (working their own dogs). Students are encouraged to video their sessions with their dogs (with parental guidance/supervision) and upload to the class for review and showcasing! *Please note: Class will take place in the Outschool classroom only, and does not meet live unless requested. Weekly videos and assignments will be posted and students will be able to respond on their own time. The instructor will engage and provide feedback on discussion board postings, assignments and questions. Activities may include reading materials, watching videos, answering discussion questions and completing quizzes.
Learning Goals
In this 4-week course, students will learn how to work with their dogs and teach basic obedience at home!
Students will learn how to teach their dogs
Watch Me
Sit
Implied Stay
Down
Recall
Place
This class will discuss a variety of different training techniques and tools. Marker (clicker) training will also be taught. Each week, students will be shown training techniques and given homework to complete. They will be invited to upload videos of working sessions with their dogs for instructor review/guidance/tips.
Week 1: Students will learn what motivates dogs to work, or in a sense, what their “paycheck” is. Clicker training (marker training) will be taught and the markers will be charge (giving meaning to the marker words.) No two dogs are the same, therefore training techniques may differ. During this week, students will also be working leash pressure, focus drills and food luring into the “sit” position.
Week 2: This week, students will build on the week prior. Students will be shown how to teach “implied stay” which is significantly different that utilizing a “stay” command. The “down” command will also be taught and used in conjunction with the implied stay.
Week 3: During this week, we will build even further on previously learned commands and markers. Students will learn to train the “place” command as well as the recall (come) command.
Week 4: This week will be used as a review/practice week to brush up on all commands learned and proof with a variety of distractions. The goal is for the dog to build duration!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Amber and I am a homeschooling mom of a wonderful 9 year old daughter. While raising my daughter, I attended McNeese State University where I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor's degree in sociology. I also possess a private investigation's license through the State of Louisiana and have worked as a fraud consultant for the state as well. With that, however, I have a passion for working with animals and attended Duke University online for a certification program in canine cognition and emotion. I have attended countless seminars, workshops and certification courses. In 2016, I founded a German Shepherd rescue which now operates nationwide. in 2016, I also followed my passion to work with animals and now own/operate a canine training and rehabilitation facility. We also offer doggy daycare and boarding!
Through Outschool, I will be teaching canine-related classes. As an animal advocate both by profession and heart, I feel very strongly about educating dog owners on the dynamics of the canine/human relationship. I will be teaching extremely important topics such as canine safety 101 and canine psychology as well as canine behavior and body language. I will also be teaching fun and exciting courses such that introduce basic obedience at home!
I believe that we need to take proper care of animals and foster a mutually respectful relationship based on trust and communication. Children who love and are passionate about animals should be able learn about the amazing career fields that involve working with animals on a daily basis! As a homeschooling parent myself, I understand the importance of electives classes and fostering a child's interests and passions.
When not working dogs or teaching, I am very passionate about horseback riding. After not riding for nearly a decade, I decided to take riding lessons to learn from the ground, up!
