Does your child love Pokémon? Does your child know or are they learning long division? If so sign them up to take this class. We will use the standard algorithm to help Mew Save Charizard's Baby. In this onetime class we will go over the standard algorithm for Long Division using the mnemonic "Does Mew Save Charizard’s Baby?" This class is for learners who have been taught division but need more practice or help with long division. They do not have to like or love Pokémon, but it is welcomed. The class will begin by everyone introducing themselves. This will help all learners become comfortable, and ready to learn. Learners are welcome to share their favorite Pokémon, and or Pokémon fact with the class. After introductions, I will teach a mini lesson on long division. This will include the story behind Charmander (Charizard’s baby) and why he needs to be saved. The students will be told that if they can complete the “You Do” portion of the lesson towards the end, Mew will save Charmander. All learners will write down the mnemonic “Does Mew Save Charizard’s baby?” This will be used to complete the long division problems. The learners will watch as the I show them how to complete a problem using the "I do" method. Each learner will try a problem or two, using the "We do" method. This will allow questions, and conversations on anything that the learners are wondering or confused about. Learners will work together with me to use the long division algorithm to solve the problem. We will discuss Pokémon throughout the lesson, and brainstorm ways that Charmander can be saved. At the end of the class the learners will be given a problem to do on their own, using the "You do" method. If the learners complete the problems correctly, Mew will save Charmander. Learners will share their answers and be able to demonstrate their understanding by explaining what they did to get their answer. As a current math teacher, I welcome and enjoy questions and conversation from learners. Learners participation and conversation will lead the class. If learners are quiet, I will engage learners by asking them questions and initiating conversations. Please note that due to the nature of this class, learner questions, and conversation, the class time may be extended by a few minutes.
Learning Goals
Students will practice the standard algorithm for long division. They will complete long division problems with and without remainders.
