Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Master the art of writing a DBQ. Document-Based Questions (DBQs) are foundational to demonstrating a student's skill at analyzing historical documents. They allow the student to show in a written format their understanding and contextualization of primary documents to consolidate their historical understanding. DBQs are also a key essay type on all history AP exams. I was an AP student myself, and I am now an AP teacher, AP authorized online provider, and AP grader. I have a solid understanding of the AP rubric, as well as the broader skill of DBQs in historical analysis in all history courses.

This class will teach the student how to approach, analyze, and compose a strong DBQ. Each week we will focus on hands-on practical skills such as 1-how to approach the question and how to analyze the documents, while planning and writing a strong thesis, 2-how to handle evidence and context within the essay, and 3-how to address point of view and the writing process in the DBQ style.

I highly recommend students take my basic essay writing course, as well as my 1 day class on analyzing primary documents prior to this class to be best prepared.

What to expect from this course:
-Dive deep into primary source documents and analyze them like a pro
-Develop a strong understanding of historical context and historiography
-Learn how to craft a compelling thesis statement and support it with evidence
-Master the art of crafting a clear, concise, and engaging DBQ essay

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to approach and plan a DBQ. We will practice analyzing primary documents and presenting that analysis in an essay form, acknowledging point of view and historical context.
