Do you Haiku? You will after you attend this exciting creative writing class!

To introduce learners to the haiku, I begin this class with images of Japan's natural landscape which served as the original inspiration for haiku writers and offer the history of the haiku art form. During this visual presentation, I encourage learners to respond to the images they see and to share their own impressions with the group. After presenting the history of the haiku, I demonstrate the line and syllable requirements of the haiku and share traditional haikus as examples. As a group, we work together to identify the form, structure, and subjects of these examples as well as interpret the themes of these short but powerful pieces of poetry. Learners are invited to participate in the analysis of the haikus and to ask questions about their defining features. Once we've studied the history and form of the haiku and reviewed examples of this beautiful three-line poetic form, we'll get our creative juices flowing by writing haikus of our own following the line and syllable standards and reflecting on the landscapes of our experiences. Our writing time will be in the form of a workshop with learners working both independently and in collaboration with fellow learners and me as needed. To close the class those learners who would like to are invited to share their creations with the group along with the imagery that inspired their writing.

I look forward to exploring this simple yet powerful poetic form together and can't wait to see how YOU HAIKU!

Welcome to my classroom!

For 30 years I've helped students appreciate literature, develop their rhetorical and creative writing skills, and better organize and complete tasks. A central goal of my teaching & coaching is empowering students with strategies they can make use of on their own, and in each class I encourage students to participate fully in our sessions together by contributing to class discussions and asking questions.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Education, a Master's Degree in Literature, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction. My current class offerings include literature studies, book clubs, creative writing and formal essay writing classes, and Executive Function coaching.

When I'm not teaching, I love spending time with my family and traveling! :)
