In this playful Creative Action class, learners will explore how to bring objects to life using their bodies, voices, and imaginations!

Class experience

Learners will develop introductory acting and puppetry skills to create their own unique characters for two common objects and perform a story with them.
Hello!
I go by Ms. Laura (she/her) and I am an arts educator and professional theater artist. I have a background in teaching arts classes after school, touring immersive theater performances for youth, and facilitating arts-integrated curriculum in schools. Through my work, I have taught in dozens of elementary school classrooms and served over 1,000 children.

I have a passion for storytelling and I teach classes that focus on acting, movement-based theater, and puppetry. I value creative play and its transformative power to foster community and develop critical life skills. I believe that by sharing our stories and creating new ones together we can produce a more compassionate, joyful, and just world.

I have a B.A. in theater, arts administration, and Spanish from Drury University. In addition to being an arts educator, I am a professional actor, stage manager, and props master in Austin, TX. I have worked with award-winning theater companies such as The Hidden Room Theater and Glass Half Full Theater. I am excited to get to know your child and create together!
Two everyday objects that the learner can easily hold in their hand, (an individual yogurt container, an old tube of toothpaste, a spring, a napkin, etc. ). If the object has a movable part, such as a lid or something that bends or turns, I think it offers more room to explore movement, but it is not required. Optional: a permanent marker if the learner would like to add eyes to their puppet.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Help your learner find two common objects that they would like to puppeteer. Challenge your learner to find objects that they can turn into characters, not things that were already made to be characters, like toys.
