Description
Class Experience
Students will be able to understand the basics of DNA processes and how they relate to genes and gene expression.
I am offering this class in response to a request! I love science and think all children should have the opportunity to learn about genetics! I have completed both undergraduate and graduate level Biology and Physiology courses and am working on my certificate for Middle School Science in the state or PA, which I hope to complete this year. I also did some of my student teaching in a Middle School Science class. I have a special interest in Epigenetics and have researched it extensively including its effects on behavior. Working in the medical/mental health field has given me understanding in how the body works and processes involved in the expression of genes and genetic characteristics.
There will be a weekly reading and comprehension activity as well as an extension activity related to the topic of the week. We will work on a simulation as a class and students will complete the reading and analysis of the case study independently.
Teacher will provide notes and activities in PowerPoint weekly.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed through class discussion and completion of assignments. Assessment will be informal through conversation and answering questions in the classroom forum.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class is suitable for the ages listed! Younger students may need more parental support with some subject matter!
We will refer to websites and research surrounding the latest technological innovations in DNA research.
