Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this course, we will embark on an exciting journey, exploring the fascinating world of matter that surrounds us.

Day 1: What is Matter?
Exploring the State of Matter
We will investigate solids, liquids, and gases and learn about condensing, melting, and freezing. In this lesson, we will look at water and what happens when it freezes, melts, evaporates, and condenses. We will draw a diagram of this process.

Day 2: What is a Mixture?
Exploring Physical Changes
We will investigate physical changes, mixtures, and solutions. This lesson will discuss separating different mixtures, such as a group of coins or a salad, and making a tasty solution (lemonade).

Day 3: What are Pure Substances?
Exploring Pure Substances
We will investigate pure substances. This lesson will examine the physical differences between salt and sugar. We will list the differences between the two substances and describe how we know one is different. We will also briefly examine the periodic table of elements.

Day 4: How do we make New Substances?
Exploring Chemical Changes
Using marshmallow models, we will investigate the differences between elements, molecules, and compounds and observe a chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda.

Due to the students' age, please have an adult in the room or nearby if they need help during class. Thank you!

Learning Goals

Students will be exposed to many new concepts of chemistry and physical science: solids, liquids, gases, physical changes, observation, physical properties, chemical changes, elements, molecules, and compounds.
