Class Experience

Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived. This course will discuss the historical context, production history, dramatic and design styles of Six the Musical. Henry the VIII's famous six wives come together to rewrite HER-story and tell their side of their of the story. Through lectures, demonstrations, and interactive lessons, this interdisciplinary course will challenge and entertain any young Queen (or King!) interested in the mega-hit musical. Each lesson will feature a brief lecture, a discussion between learners, and practical application through written, vocal, or physical activity.

Week 1: A Story That You Think You've Heard Before- We will discuss the six legendary wives as their stories are told in the history books. Learn about the English monarchy, Tudor times, and the paths that lead these very different women to the man who made them famous.

Week 2: The Historemix - We will discuss the production history of the hit musical, Six. From a modest production put on by two university students to multiple productions performing around the world, including Broadway. Learn about the pop divas who inspired the modern retelling of the Queens and how the creators integrated contemporary styles with classic history.

Week 3: All Ya Wanna Do is Sing - This week we will discuss the different vocal styles used in each song as we learn a small section of select songs. We will begin with vocal warm-up and a discussion of healthy vocal technique. We will move on to text analysis, acting choices, and performing the song. Learners will be provided with sheet music (cost included in class price)

Week 4: Get Down - We will discuss the choreography influences and choices made for each song. We will engage in a physical and dance warm up before learning a section of the finale number with choreography inspired by the original West End cast. Students will need a clear, 5ftx5ft square area, and clothes and shoes they are able to move in (bare feet acceptable).

Week 5: We'll Turn This Vier Into A Nine - We will discuss the historical and modern influences on the costume design. Learners will follow along with a demonstration of the glamorous makeup indicative of the show. Learners will need: foundation, concealer, and contour in the appropriate shade for Learner's skin; dark black and/or brown eye shadow as well as shadow in the color of the Queen they've chosen (gold, green, white, red, pink or blue); corresponding glitter; black eyeliner; mascara; lipstick; blush; makeup application tools.

Weel 6: We're SIX! - Review and discuss everything we've learned, including critical discussion about what we love and hate about the musical itself. To celebrate the completion of the course we will play a rousing round of Tudor Trivia and the winner will receive a royal prize.

Learners need no prior experience, but an interest in Six is certainly recommended!

This class is inclusive, which means Learners of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome. Together we work to build an inclusive environment that encourages, supports, and celebrates our diverse voices. We share and respect pronouns, we support each other's Learning differences, and we create a safe space for all Learners. If you or your Learner needs any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about history, theatre production, dance, and vocal techniques for a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary educational experience.
